What happened to “Sarah, Ty, & Mel“? That’s the question I’ve been inundated with over the last week. One day we’re on-air and the next we’re off. Unfortunately, the answer to that question and the answer no one really wants to hear, is that our show was cancelled. The station decided that they are going in a different direction. We didn’t know that Monday, November 9th was going to be our last show. A lot of you have asked that and wondered why we didn’t say goodbye. I had no idea that the 8:20am Rundown would be my last and that by the same time the next morning I’d be unemployed. That’s the reality though; the reality of getting laid off. For those who are in this ever-growing and undesired club of getting a pink slip, I know you can relate. I know this too, because so many of you have reached out. I’ve compiled several of your messages and posted them below. Your support has amazed me!!!
Getting laid off is new to me. I’ve never been laid off or fired in my life. It’s humbling, to say the least. It also sucks. Yes, I must include that it TOTALLY SUCKS! Fortunately for me though, I have an amazing support system that includes all of you. Your outpouring of positive messages on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and all of your e-mails have truly made my heart smile. Yet again, another reason I love social media! To know that I impacted so many of your mornings (a time in which most people would rather be sleeping) and that I helped make them the least bit more enjoyable is extremely gratifying.
It was also rewarding to get to work with a group of people who I truly consider to be my good friends and some, family. Albeit a crazy family– I often joke we’re one tent away from being a full-blown circus. I’m proud of Sarah, Ty, Samy and myself though. We created a show from scratch and were able to build a following in a short period of time with little resources. Being part of a morning show from its inception is an experience I’ll never forget. It’s invaluable. I’m also proud of us for creating original content. It’s easy to “mail it in”, but we strived to be different and not take the easy road. From “Deep Thoughts from the Men on Tinder” to Samy reading lyrics for “Kickin’ it Ole’ School”, we created some great tune-in moments.
I’m thankful to DC’s 107.3 for giving me this opportunity and to Cumulus for allowing us to have such creative control. I loved getting to think outside the box and come up with ideas like the Starbuck’s card giveaway on our Instagram. I’m so happy you all loved that so much! Apparently it’s become so popular that they’re doing it at other stations and nationwide now! Knowing that I came up with that and people are enjoying free coffee because of it, people I don’t even know, that’s wonderful. You all know how I feel about coffee and if you don’t: coffee = life. Now you do.
As for what my next move is, to be completely honest, I really don’t know. I’m still living in DC and absolutely love it here. Of course, Brian (my boyfriend) is chomping at the bit for me to move home to Florida. No boxes have been packed or moving companies paid though and I’m still looking for jobs in the area (and elsewhere). Brian is aware of this and has been unbelievably supportive. He understands that radio and broadcasting is an extension of me, in that it’s my passion. The last thing he’d ever want is for me to be unhappy or make a decision too soon, so I’m taking some time to figure it out.
My immediate plans include focusing on my blog, starting a YouTube channel, and replying to all of your awe-inspiring e-mails and Facebook messages. Outside of all that, the next step is still very much unknown. Maybe a move to Florida until I find something? Maybe a move to Florida for good? Maybe I move to California to pursue being an entertainment news reporter? These are the questions I’m focusing on now. I’ll be updating my blog as I go, so if you’d like to follow along you can subscribe at the top right of this page.
I can’t thank you all enough for spending your mornings with me and the rest of the STM crew (DJ Flounder, Luis, Jeremiah, Noah, and the interns– I didn’t forget about you!). This last year and a half has challenged me in so many ways and has been a huge growth period for me personally. While I’m looking forward to getting my full name back “Melanie”, sleeping in, and getting to stay up late enough to watch Jimmy Fallon when it actually airs…I’ll miss all of you and getting to see my extended family every morning. I can’t wait to figure out my next step and see what awesome ventures the rest of the team decide to embark on.
